New GW paints

This morning I have tried using the new GW paints and all I have to say is -

DONT

They are crap, coloured water and I almost regret buying them.

Just a quick update.

Got a load if models for Christmas and now need to really ramp up my painting.

Finished Laris, the Stinger and the Raek and have now started on Kaya the moonhunter, the thullg and the skinwalker unit.

Battery fail!

Have done some painting today and have finished the Raek and Stinger, will also hopefully finish the Shepherd tonight as well.

However the batteries died in my camera and so are on charge, photos will follow!

I have also glued the 2 parts of Laris together, time to break out the green stuff and fill in the (massive) gaps! I really dont mid gap filling on metal models as I know how they are made and the fact that the molds do warp during production. I have to say I am still impressed with PP`s production quality!

Doesn't mean I like gap filling though!

A bit more progress

Done a bit more on the batch of models I am currently painting, I think painting a load of different miniatures at the same time is quite good as I am not getting bored with a single model.

After these I am really looking forward to painting Kaya the Moonhunter and Laris, not really sure why I am looking forward to it. I am hoping that I will have them done before Christmas day so I can start on the stuff I know I am getting as gifts.

Been quite productive this morning.

Got a load of stuff done this morning, including some painting.

I am a lot happier with the Legion beast flesh now but am now having trouble matching the colour of the Legion armour, this is not helped by the fact that my pLylyth is in the display case of my local FLGS!

Oh also have been out and picked up pThagrosh, eKaya and a 3 man unit of Warpborn skinwalkers, which are some heavy lumps of metal!

That should keep me going over Christmas, along with the stuff people have got for me as gift`s, no idea how many points it will add. Just looking for a relatively local tournament to go to now!

New Kaya sculpt and last night

Had a really bad headache last night and so didn't get any painting done! However with the Christmas break coming up I should hopefully get a lot done.

My second order has arrived at my FLGS just waiting to see what has actually come in, I have a nasty feeling that the druids and skinwalkers are still out of stock meaning I will have to go elsewhere to buy them. I really dont like doing this as I really do believe in supporting your local shop, even if it means paying full retail price I would rather do that and have somewhere to play as the alternative is the the shop going out of business!

In other news Privateer Press have announced a new sculpt for Kaya the Wildborn -

I really like and will probably get it, assuming it is actually available in the UK!

I would have done some painting this evening however the power cut has stopped that!

After my work Christmas lunch today I got home a little early and did a bit of work on the spell martyr. I am not sure about the red cloth and am considering repainting it to an off white, something similiar to the colour of my Legion beast carapace.

Have also put another wash over the Stinger and Raek.

I do like the red though, I just dont think it will go with the rest of the army!

Paint brands

I have been thinking about the paint I use recently and have decided to branch out and try some other paints. A quick bit of history first, to hopefully explain where I am coming from. I started gaming and miniature painting when I was 12 and I am now 32, giving me 20 years of experience. In that time I have mostly used Games Workshops paints as they are easily available from a number of places in the UK and as I started (and sometime still do) playing GW games I used there paint.

Forward a few years and I have tried all kinds of things from tubes of artists paint to oils mostly with out much success. Also in this time Games Workshop changed there paint manufacturer with the resulting change in the qualities of the paint, which I had to adapt to. A few years I picked up some Flames of War models and wanting to paint them in (nearly) correct uniforms I also picked up some of the Flames of War paint sets. These sets came with what I now know are Vallejo paints and now I almost prefer to use them over the standard GW paints.

The next major thing that happened to affect how I paint was the release of the foundation paints and washes from GW, the foundation paints have a much higher ratio of pigment in them meaning that they cover a lot better and can be thinned down much more while the washes remove a lot of the guesswork involved when making a wash. Now my painting style is a result of learning to paint the GW way, basecoat, wash, drybrush highlight and the new paints and washes complimented that perfectly. It is also around this time I discovered pigments and dip, but will leave these for another time.

The last major thing that was a wet pallet, this has changed a lot about how I paint. Now I can make up colours and use them for 3 or 4 days without much worrying about drying out.

And so this brings me to now, I am considering getting some of the P3 paints to see what they are like and if I can get on with using them. I will most probably get the Everblight set as it appears to have almost the same shade of blue I am using for my Legion beasts and the basic Iron Kingdoms set for a base range of colours.

I wonder how this will change my painting?

Had a fairly successful weekend painting, finished the Blackclad Wayfarer and the Druid Wilder. Both have now been sprayed in matte varnish.

I have now started on the Raek and the Stinger, base coating the flesh on both of them.

Near there.

Nearly done on the Wilder now, just need to tart the base up a bit!


I have put a picture of the face, I am not to good at human faces! I have not painted pupils on the eye or many highlights / shading.

Not sure what to paint next, I may start of the Cygnar again, the Spell martyrs, the Shepherd or the Raek.

I am calling it a day on the Blackclad Wayfarer and have gloss coated it, going to spray it matt in a minute (also probably take some better photos)

Next up the Druid wilder. As this is half done I may actually finish it today, that is unless I end up zoning out in front of the Xbox with Dragonage or one of the Mass Effect games!
